THE NATS, ABE & ME On Thursday night I made my first pilgrimage to RFK Stadium to catch the Washington Nationals' 328th game overall, the fourth outing of their second season. It was also the coldest baseball game I have ever seen. It was 75°+ earlier in the week, but the Washington area has been just supra-freezing for a couple days now (in fact, there is snow on the ground as I type this). And beer does not, as I tried to convince myself, warm you up. The game itself wasn't all that bad, even if we did give up at the end of the eighth inning — it was a school night after all, and we were correct to assume the Nats would go on to lose by a single run. But before then we took in a decent (if incomplete) comeback, and most important of all, I got my picture taken with Honest Abe: ![]() Alas, he did not win the evening's costume race (this night's honor went to Tom Jefferson), but he did win the race to be featured in a short video of him lumbering up the steps between sections 220 and 221: I also have footage of Screech, the Nationals' baby eagle mascot, dancing on the dugout roof like... well, like Dancin' Homer. If interest proves sufficient, I can upload that, too. Labels: Abraham Lincoln, Screech, Washington Nationals |
